Chapter 9

I sat outside my job. I needed to go in, but either gravity had increased or someone had replaced my muscles with lead weights. I was an alien. It could happen. I shook my head. I had to get it together and go inside, whether I was a human or an alien or… a cartoon character from the 1980s. I had to make money.

I got out of the car, looking up at the sky. It was going to rain. We needed it, but Austin never got rain, and then it got a deluge that practically flooded the city out of existence. I loved the rain. I turned around to look at the guys in the BMW parked next to me. Reese and Briggs.

Without overthinking it, I walked over, and they were both out of the car and standing next to it before I reached them.

I stared at Reese for a long second. Instinct moved me forward, and I put my arms around him. “I’m angry. Really, really mad. But I won’t be forever. At some point, I’ll be something else… Right now, I need space, but it won’t be forever, okay?”

He sagged against me for a second, and I held onto him, meeting Briggs’ gaze around his shoulder. His eyes held such heat, it threatened to steal my breath. He nodded to me. Yes, he understood. I was still mad, still fuming. But that didn’t mean that Reese should fall apart with worry.

Reese stood straighter before he cupped my cheek. “Okay. I need to take care of you, little one. I need it more than anything.”

“Let’s get through the day.” I stepped back, withdrawing from the contact. I had way too much to process, and the idea that Reese needed to take care of me was just another thing to add to it.

Reese released me, albeit reluctantly, and Briggs put his arm around Reese’s shoulder as my sapphire-eyed savior favored me with the same compassionate smile that so captivated me the day of my accident. “Thank you, little one.”

He shouldn’t have to thank me for being decent. The fury simmering in my blood turned my stomach to acid. So many little lies. Lies they weren’t responsible for and yet, yet they were tied up in all of it. I needed time to separate the facts from the emotion. Like, having everything I knew about myself turned upside down. Like, being attacked in my apartment, twice. Wait…

“Hey, Briggs, I sense danger. It’s something I’ve always been able to do. But I didn’t right before those—things attacked. Why not?”

He swept his gaze over the parking lot. The restaurant wasn’t busy yet. We were in the lull between one rush and the next, so the lot was only half full. “Those particular—people have the ability to block our talents. They’re very dangerous, very scary. If they’d had any more of them with them, it could have been much worse. We’re going to have to figure out how to secure you. That’s for later.
